East Central Community College’s Lady Warriors are hoping to remain undefeated while the Warriors anticipate their first season victory when both squads travel to longtime rival East Mississippi Community College tonight. Women’s action begins at 5:30 p.m. followed by the men’s contest at 7:30 p.m. on the Scooba campus.
The Lady Warriors began the 2009-10 campaign by rallying from a 12-point, second-half deficit to defeat the Holmes Community College Lady Bulldogs 82-74 Monday night in Goodman.
Danielle Cole of Philadelphia had 24 points in leading the Lady Warriors to the non-division victory. Leake Academy product Hannah Lee, also from Philadelphia, chipped in 16 points. Also scoring were Yolanda Jones of Lake, 10; Quentinette Odom of Scott Central and Demtria Slocum, a product of Bradford High School in Starke, Fla., eight each; Shantel Neely, of Searcy (Ark.) High School, seven; Xenobia Lavender of Noxapater, three; and Sierra Croff of Newton County, two.
Tiffany Haynes pumped in 18 points to lead Holmes, which led 33-28 at the break.
In the men’s contest, the Warriors’ rally fell short in a 78-69 decision to the home-standing Bulldogs.
Kenneth Thomas of Jackson Provine was the top scorer for EC with 17 points. Other point makers were Steve Edwards of Newton, 16; Antonio Grace, also a Newton High School product, 11; Aquill Baynard, of Elisk High School in Houston, Tex., and Joshua Carothers of Columbus, six each; Kendall Jackson, also of Columbus, four; Jonathan McClendon, a product of Alief Hastings HS in Houston, three; and Shelton Banks of Morton, Keondre Hodges of Newton and Titus Mims of Alief Hastings, two each.
Holmes was led by Jonathan Ratliff who poured in 27 points.
EC trailed 33-31 at halftime.
