ECCC Names Warrior Corps Members

Eighty-one students are members of the 2009-10 Warrior Corps at East Central Community College, announced Student Services staff members Lanette Hanna and Romonica Evans, who serve as advisers.

The Warrior Corps is a special group of students selected to assist the College in recruiting and provide assistance for various events and activities on the Decatur campus.

Students in the prestigious organization and their respective counties include the following: 

LEAKE COUNTY

Warrior Corps members from Leake County are Cayla Boyd, Kerri Cook and Monica Leann James, all of Carthage.

Boyd, a sophomore business administration major, was a cheerleader and Diamond Darling her freshman year.

She is an honor graduate of Carthage High School, where she served as cheer captain.

Her parents are Matt and Lisa Boyd of Carthage.

Cook, a sophomore business major, serves as vice president of the student body association.

She is a graduate of Carthage High School and was chosen a senior beauty.

She is the daughter of Lisa Cook.

James is a sophomore special education major. She serves as a manager for the Lady Diamond Warrior softball team.

She is a graduate of Leake Academy, where she was Beta Club president, yearbook editor and received the advanced writing award.

 NESHOBA COUNTY

Students from Neshoba County tapped for the Warrior Corps include Morgan Bailey, John Blount, Sarah Breland, Nicole Franklin, Abbie Joiner, Jessica Kilpatrick, Marty Kirk, Meredith McKee, Hannah Lee, Lauren Nicholas, Anna Powell, Paige Richardson, Cody Spence and Brandy Talbert.

Bailey, a freshman education major, is a member of Phi Beta Lambda, Baptist Student Union and yearbook staff.

She was salutatorian at Philadelphia High School, where she was selected most outstanding senior girl, special honor student and a MS Scholar.

Her parents are David and Dee Dee Bailey of Philadelphia.

Blount, a freshman engineering major, is a member of Phi Beta Lambda and Alpha Alpha Epsilon.

He is a special distinction graduate of Neshoba Central High School. He was a member of Leadership Neshoba County and served as a Boys’ State delegate.

His parents are Joey and Sheila Blount of Philadelphia.

Breland, a freshman pre-dentistry major, is a member of the Centralettes, the dance line for the Wall O’ Sound Marching Band.

She was salutatorian at Neshoba Central High School, where she also served as a class officer and student council member. In addition, she received several athletic awards.

Her parents are Andy and Angie Breland of Philadelphia.

Franklin, a sophomore social work major, is a member of the Wall O’ Sound Marching Band and Baptist Student Union Council. 

She was an honor graduate of Philadelphia High School, where she received awards in English and art.

Her parents are Terry and Sharon Franklin of Philadelphia.

Joiner, a freshman liberal arts major, is a member of the Lady Warrior softball team.

She is a special distinction graduate of Neshoba Central High School and received various athletic awards.

Her parents are Richard and Cheryl Joiner of Philadelphia. 

Kilpatrick, a sophomore geology major, is a member of the Baptist Student Union and environmental club. She participated in soccer her freshman year.

She is a graduate of Neshoba Central High School, where she was student council member class officer, Fellowship of Christian Athletes officer and All-Star Cheerleader. She also received computer and soccer awards.

Her parents are Willis and Lynette Kilpatrick of Philadelphia.

Kirk, a freshman psychology major, is a member of the Baptist Student Union and newspaper staff and participates in intramural sports.

She is an honor graduate of Winston Academy, where she was named to the Hall of Fame and was STAR Student. She also received science and highest average awards and numerous other honors. In addition, she was a cheerleader and softball team captain.

Her parents are Bruce and Linda Kirk of Noxpater.

McKee, a freshman psychology major, is a member of the Baptist Student Union, Phi Beta Lambda and yearbook staff.

She was valedictorian and special distinction graduate at Neshoba Central High School, where she was also chosen “Most Likely to Succeed.”

Her parents are Greg and Linda McKee of Philadelphia.

Lee, a sophomore pre-nursing major, is a member of the Lady Warrior basketball and softball teams; Phi Theta Kappa and Sigma Sigma Mu Tau.

 A graduate of Leake Academy, Lee was named Mississippi Private School Association Player of the Year and received the Don Souder Award, presented to the top female student athlete. She also received district most valuable player honors in softball and basketball. In addition, she was chosen Miss Neshoba County in 2008.

Her parents are Jeff and Tammy Lee of Philadelphia.

Nicolas, a freshman pre-nursing major, is a member of the Lady Warrior softball team.

She is a special distinction graduate of Neshoba Central High School, where she was a class officer and received various athletic awards.

Her parents are Jeff and Sandy Nicholas of Philadelphia. 

Powell, a sophomore liberal arts major, is a member of the Baptist Student Union Council.

She is a graduate of Philadelphia High School, where she was Beta Club vice president and class treasurer.

Her parents are Mark and Susan Powell of Philadelphia.

Richardson, a freshman secondary education major, is a member of the Centralettes, the dance line for the Wall O’ Sound Marching Band.

She is a special honors graduate of Neshoba Central High School, where she was named to the academic hall of fame. She is a recipient of the Kappa Kappa Iota and Neshoba County Supervisors scholarships.

She is the daughter of Eddie and Penny Richardson of Philadelphia.

Spence, a freshman psychology major, is a member of the Baptist Student Union and Phi Beta Lambda.

He is a graduate of Neshoba Central High School, where he was an honor roll student and class officer.

His parents are Ray and Amanda Spence of Union.

Talbert, a freshman pre-nursing major, is a member of the Baptist Student Union, Phi Beta Lambda, Sigma Sigma Mu Tau and yearbook staff.

She is a special distinction graduate of Neshoba Central High School. She also received the Spirit of Junior Miss Award.

 NEWTON COUNTY

Students from Newton County in the Warrior Corps include Anna Alexander, Summer Alexander, Colton Amis, Brittany Cochran, Celia Boggan, Brandon Boulton, Reginald Davis, Bill Flowers, Junenette Harris, Jenny Holyfield, Brandon Kennedy, Hannah Peoples and Shelby Smith.

Anna Alexander, a freshman liberal arts major, serves as class secretary and is a member of the Lady Warrior tennis team, Baptist Student Union drama team, yearbook and newspaper staffs and EC Environmental Club.

A home-schooled student, Alexander was a member of the Mississippi State 4-H Leadership Team and was named 2008 4-H’er of the Year. She was also a recipient of the PEO “Star” Scholarship.

Her parents are George and Cindy Alexander of Little Rock.

Summer Alexander, a freshman occupational therapy major, is a member of the Lady Warrior softball team.

 She is a highest honors graduate of Newton County High School, where she received highest average awards.

Her parents are Bruce and Sandra Alexander of Little Rock. 

Amis, a sophomore secondary education major, is a member of Phi Theta Kappa, concert choir and tennis team.

He is a graduate of Newton County High School and received the most valuable men’s tennis player award. He was also a Principal’s List scholar.

His parents are Allen and Kim Amis of Decatur.

Cochran, a sophomore pre-medicine major, is a member of the Lady Warrior softball team and Phi Theta Kappa.

She was salutatorian of Newton County High School and received several highest average awards.

Her parents are Neil and Lanea Cochran of Hickory.

Boggan, a freshman elementary education major is a member of the Baptist Student Union, Wesley Foundation and concert choir. She was selected a freshman homecoming maid.

She is a graduate of Newton County High School, where she was senior and junior class president. She also served as sophomore class treasurer and received Spanish and speech awards. In addition, she was selected for the Mississippi All-State, All-Girls Honor Choir and participated in the Young Guns Leadership Development Conference.

Her parents are Charles and Debbie Boggan of Decatur.

 Boulton, a freshman music education major with voice emphasis, serves as assistant drum major for the Wall O’ Sound Marching Band and is also a member of the Ac’cents and concert choir.

A Hickory resident, he is a graduate of Newton County High School, where he twice received superior awards for drum major and twice was named best in class drum major. He was also presented the John Phillip Sousa Award and was chosen most outstanding minority.

His parents are Nelda McDonald and James Boulton.

 Davis, a sophomore liberal arts major, is a member of the gospel choir.

He is a graduate of Newton County High School, where he was named outstanding vocational-technical senior. He was also an honor roll student. 

Flowers, a sophomore education major, serves as a manager for the Lady Warrior and Warrior basketball teams. 

He is a graduate of Newton High School, where he was an honor roll student.

He is the son of Rebecca Flowers of Newton.

Harris, a sophomore pre-nursing major, is a member of the gospel choir.

 She was valedictorian at Newton High School and received various academic awards. She was also a recipient of the McMullan Scholarship.

Her parents are Lille and Willie Harris of Lawrence.

Holyfield is a freshman liberal arts major.

She is a highest honors graduate of Newton County High School and was selected a homecoming maid and class favorite. She was also chosen “Most Likely to Succeed” and “Best Personality.”

Her parents are John and Patsy Holyfield of Little Rock.

Kennedy, a sophomore electrical engineering major, serves as Baptist Student Union president and is a member of the cheerleading squad.

He is a graduate of Union High School, where he received a leadership award and was selected a class favorite.

His parents are Eric and Tammara Kennedy of Union.

Peoples, a Lawrence resident, is a freshman pre-nursing major.

She is a graduate of Newton County Academy, where she was chosen for the Hall of Fame and selected Most Beautiful and Most Dependable. She was also an honor student and a DAR Good Citizen Scholar.

Her parents are Jim Peoples and Kay Reynolds.

Smith, a freshman liberal arts major, is a member of the Lady Warrior softball team.

She is a graduate of Union High School, where she received the Citizenship Award and other honors.

 Her parents are Steve and Sue Ellen Smith of Union.

SCOTT COUNTY

Warrior Corps members from Scott County include Reshetta Benton, Michael Ann Durham, Sami Elkins, Marissa Gordy, Jennifer Moore, Lindsey Bishop, Kimberly Patterson and Rochelsey Thomas.

Benton, a sophomore pre-nursing major, is a member of the Gospel Choir and Diamond Darlings.

She is a graduate of Forest High School, where she served as student body president and received the citizenship award. She was also an honor student and received Student of the Month honors.

Her parents are Jerome Benton, Sr. and Patricia C. Benton of Forest.

Durham, a freshman pre-medicine major, is a member of Sigma Sigma Mu Tau.

She was valedictorian at Scott Central High School and received Highest Honors Award in Chemistry II.

Her parents are Mike and Ann Durham of Forest.

Elkins, a freshman pre-nursing major, is a member of the Baptist Student Union, Lady Warrior tennis team and Centralettes, the dance line for the Wall O’ Sound Marching Band.

She is a graduate of Forest High School, where she was named to the Hall of Fame and selected Most Intelligent. She was also a member of the Beta Club, Student Council and National Honor Society.

Her parents are Howard and Sandy Elkins of Forest.

Gordy, a freshman pre-nursing major, is a member of the ECCC Players and participated in the recent dinner theater production of “Mash.”

She is an honor graduate of East Rankin Academy, where she was Mu Alpha Theta treasurer and member of the ACT Team.

Her parents are Wayne and Rachel Gordy of Forest.

Moore, a freshman elementary education major, is a member of the Wall O’ Sound Marching Band and Baptist Student Union.

She is a highest honors graduate of Forest High School, where she was named to the Hall of Fame and served as homecoming queen.

Her parents are Shirley and Buddy Moore of Forest. 

Bishop, a freshman liberal arts major, is a member of the ECCC Players, Baptist Student Union and Centralettes, the dance line for the Wall O’ Sound Marching Band. She recently participated in the fall dinner theater presentation of “Mash.”

She is a graduate of Sebastopol High School and was selected Miss SHS, homecoming queen and senior class favorite. She was voted Most Likely to Succeed and received the Citizenship Award.

Her parents are Matt and Jill Bishop of Sebastopol.

 Patterson, a freshman pre-nursing major, is a member of Sigma Sigma Mu Tau.

She is an honor graduate of Morton High School and member of the National Technical Honor Society.

Her parents are Tim and Rhonda Patterson of Morton.

Thomas, a sophomore pre-nursing major, is a member of Phi Theta Kappa and Sigma Sigma Mu Tau.

She was salutatorian at Forest High School, where she served as student body president and was president of the National Honor Society. She was also a Beta Club member and mentor for Mentoring Magic.

Her parents are Ledora and Sammy Benton and Johnny Thomas.

WINSTON COUNTY

Students from Winston County who are Warrior Corps members include Stewart Frey, Lance Goodin, Jessica Hamilton, Kelsey Hill, Samantha Holdiness, Meredith Jones and Hailey Moody.

Frey, a freshman elementary education major, is a member of the Baptist Student Union and Students in Education Association.

She is a graduate of Nanih Waiya High School, where she was named to the Hall of Fame and served as homecoming queen and sophomore maid. She was also a class officer and received various Who’s Who honors and athletic awards. In addition, she was tapped for Who’s Who Among American High School Students.

Her parents are Tammy and Brent Fry of Louisville. 

Goodin, a sophomore liberal arts major, is a member of the Concert Choir, ECCC Players, EC Environmental Club, Sigma Sigma Mu Tau and yearbook staff.

He is a graduate of Nanih Waiya High School, where he was a member of the Beta Club and various other organizations. 

He is the son of Lisa Goodin of Louisville.

Hamilton, a sophomore physical therapy major, is a member of Sigma Sigma Mu Tau and the EC Environmental Club. 

She is an honor graduate of Winston Academy, where she a member of Honor Society and was selected Friendliest, Most Courteous and Most Athletic.

Her parents are Jimmy and Janice Hamilton of Louisville. 

Hill, a freshman special education major, is a member of the Baptist Student Union and Student Education Association.

She is an honor graduate of Nanih Waiya Attendance Center, where she was named to the Hall of Fame and was president of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. She was also a Mississippi Scholar, campus favorite and received school spirit awards.  

Her parents are Dawn and the late Tommy Hill of Nanih Waiya.

Holdiness, a freshman pre-nursing major, is a member of the Baptist Student Union and Sigma Sigma Mu Tau. 

She was salutatorian at Nanih Waiya Attendance Center, where she was also a Mississippi Scholar and STAR Student. In addition, she was a Beta Club member.

Her parents are Kent and Debbie Holdiness of Louisville. 

Jones, a freshman secondary education major, is a member of the Baptist Student Union and Student Education Association.

She was valedictorian at Nanih Waiya Attendance Center, where she was also named to the Hall of Fame and was a Mississippi Scholar.

Her parents are Renee and Glen Jones of Louisville.

Moody, a sophomore physical education major, serves as a manager for the Warrior football team and is a member of the Student Education Association.

He is an honor graduate of Nanih Waiya Attendance Center, where he served as FFA chaplain and Student Council representative. He was also named All-District in football and received the Warrior award in baseball.  

His parents are Ron and Cindy Stroud and the late Terry Moody. 

OUT-OF-DISTRICT

Students who are Warrior Corps members from out-of-district schools include Morgan Malone of Madison and Tamara McPhail of Pelahatchie.

Malone, a freshman pre-medicine major, is a member of the Lady Warrior softball team.

She is a graduate of Madison Central High School, where she was an honor roll student and was chosen best offensive player in softball.  

Her parents are Sidney and JoAnn Malone of Madison.

McPhail is a freshman pre-nursing major.

She is a graduate of East Rankin Academy, where she was an honor roll student.

Her parents are Carl and Martha McPhail.
