East Central Community College Baptist Student Union Director Scott Vaughn is shown providing remarks during a Tree and Bench Dedication Ceremony held at the College Lake in memory of Landon Burt. Burt was an ECCC freshman last December when he drowned while filming an inspirational video for the BSU at the College Lake. Also taking part in the ceremony, which was attended by approximately 100 family and friends, were Randy Cuchens, minister of music and senior adults at First Baptist Church in Newton, and College President Dr. Phil A. Sutphin. The tree is pictured in the foreground on the right. The bench is shown at left and contains a plaque, which reads “This bench and oak tree were placed in memory of Landon Burt. The tree symbolizes the strength of Landon’s character and marks the site of his departure from this life, December 19, 2008.” Family and friends of Landon Burt earlier established the Landon Bryan Burt Endowed Scholarship, which will be awarded annually during the College’s AT&T Scholarship Luncheon.
