Contribution for ECCC Project

Charlotte Brackeen (left) of Union is shown presenting a check to Dr. Phil A. Sutphin, president of East Central Community College, with proceeds designated for the Founders’ Gym Renovation Fund. Fundraising efforts are under way to restore the facility, recognized as one of the oldest buildings on the Decatur campus and the oldest standing brick gymnasium in east Mississippi.  Brackeen’s late husband, Denver, was an All-American basketball player for the Warriors and was among the many college and high school athletes to play in the facility, which hosted hundreds of basketball games from 1930 to 1970, including local, regional and state championships for both high school and college level teams. Founders’ Gym was also used for other activities, including the traditional May Day program, proms, dances, plays, musicals, graduations and many community events. Dr. Sutphin said the renovation project includes four phases at an estimated cost of $8 million. He said the College is also pursuing grant money to assist with the renovation. Contributions may be made to the ECCC Foundation, Inc., P.O. Box 129, Decatur, MS 39327.
